Ideas to help encourage wildlife in your garden

All gardens need the input from the natural systems and wildlife for them to be successful - but you can make some simple choices which can improve your garden almost beyond belief - have a look at some of the do's and don'ts below - you could give them a try !  - No garden is too small !

DO

DON'T

  • Encourage insect life by planting suitable plants
  • Use pesticides or herbicides
  • Make birds welcome with food, water, cover and nest sites
  • Keep changing the garden
  • Keep feeders and waters clean
  • Use slug pellets - slugs are part of the food chain
  • Put up suitable nestboxes
  • Leave dead leaves at the back of a border for black birds and thrushes to turnover
  • Always check bonfires for animals before lighting
  • Check fruit cages and netting for small birds that may be trapped
  • Make a pond and bog garden but be sure that there is an easy way out for animals that might fall in.
